What is it?

A gathering for like-minded people interested and/or working in social and digital media.

Where is it?

Cafe Bisqui at 130 Flinders Street in Melbourne’s CBD.

When do you meet?

We meet every Friday throughout the year, except on public holidays. We’ve been meeting weekly since 2009, so if you don’t hear about an event or see one promoted – rock up anyway. We also have a special after-hours dinner meetup every month. These are especially popular for people who don’t like/can’t make the early mornings!

Can anyone come along?

Of course! Anyone and everyone can attend. You could be managing an agency, starting your own business, writing your first book, in your first web job, studying at uni or simply interested in social media and meeting new people. The diversity of attendees at #socialmelb is what makes it and we welcome the flat hierarchy of experience. We are also renowned for our cross-industry facilitation, so whatever vertical you work in – you’ll be fine!

Do I have to be a social media expert/guru/queen to attend?

No, you do not need to know anything about social media to attend. If you’re new to this space, #socialmelb is a great way to find out more. We do connect online as well though, so you might be greeted with the obligatory: “Are you on Twitter?”. Therefore, some appreciation of the social media space is needed.

I have to be at work by 9am, what time does it start?

We meet at 7:30am, with most people arrived by 8.20am. People can come and go as they please – you’ll have no problem getting to work on time. The majority are gone by 9.30am but some stay chatting until lunchtime even!

What will I get out of it?

You will meet new people, feel energised, inspired, knowledgeable, connected, nourished, cheerful and a plethora of other positive things!

What’s it cost?

It’s free to come along – we’re not a formal membership-based association or commercial organisation and aren’t for-profit. You just pay for your own expenses – such as meals or drinks. Sometimes we organise appeals around certain causes, so a donation might be applicable then. It’s completely determined and controlled by you though.

How is this different from Social Media Club Melbourne?

Social Media Club Melbourne holds more-formal and educational style events that happen a few times per year. In contrast, Socialmelb involves reoccurring weekly events in a conversation-oriented setting – think of it as the offline home of Melbourne’s digital community. We work in collaboration with many other events and actually helped select the committee for #smcmelb back in ’09 – so we recommend you check out what’s on elsewhere too.
